Under the umbrella of TRIO and LEARN Educational Talent Search, the LETS Go Advance Program has served as an instrumental educational support program for middle school students with academic potential within the Lubbock area since 1991.  The purpose of the program is to educate and assist students in achieving their academic and career goals.  Currently the program works with approximately 75 7th and 8th grade students from Cavazos and Dunbar Middle Schools each year.  As a participant in the LETS Go Advance Program students are provided the following services:

 

  • Academic Advisement: Educating student on junior high and high school requirements in order to help student plan for high school and post-secondary education.
  • Tutoring: Assisting student on an individual basis with subject areas in which student would like improvement.
  • Career Guidance: Providing career and vocational guidance through a series of assessment tests, career activities, and mentor opportunities.
  • Study Skills: Teaching students to practice effective study and test-taking skills.
  • LMS Retreat: The Life Management Skills (LMS) Retreat is a weekend trip filled with activities that teach students about the importance of decision-making and self-responsibility as attributes to their personal success.
  • College Campus Visit: Students spend a day at a college campus in order to experience college life and to obtain information about the cultural and academic aspects of higher education.
  • LEARN Banquet: At the end of the year, LEARN hosts a banquet in honor of its participants.  LETS Go Advance students are recognized for their accomplishments before their parents, school, and community leaders.

Upon entrance into an area high school each LETS Go Advance student is assigned a LEARN advisor who continues to assist him/her throughout high school.
